We are spirits, with a soul and in a body.

Before the foundation of the world Jesus was a spirit.  He did not stop being a spirit when he became a man just like the angels that visited Abraham did not stop being spirits when they took on bodies. Neither did the angels that left their first domain. 

How do I know that we are spirits.

1 Corinthians 15:45 
And so it is written , The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam [was made] a quickening spirit.

The word spirit used here is pneuma 4151, which means among other things.

2) the spirit, i.e. the vital principal by which the body is animated.
a) the rational spirit, the power by which the human being feels, thinks, decides
b) the soul

The focus here is on definition 3b.  
"a spirit, i.e. a simple essence, devoid of all or at least all grosser matter, and possessed of the power of knowing, desiring, deciding, and acting"
a) a life giving spirit
b) a human soul that has left the body
c) a spirit higher than man but lower than God, i.e. an angel

Clearly it is fitting to say that Jesus was a spirit with a soul, in a body, even after he became a man. The question is, is it fitting to say that men are spirits.

Acts 23:8.
For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both.

The Sadducees say that there is no spirit, but the Pharisees confess that there is a spirit of a man.  The word spirit here is pneuma.  We know that the text is not saying the Sadducees say there is no spirt (as an emotion).

Matthew 26:41.
Watch and pray , that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed [is] willing, but the flesh [is] weak.  (see also Mark 14:38).

The word for spirit here is pneuma, and clearly the text is talking about the spirit of a man.

Mathew 5:3.
Blessed [are] the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 

Luke 1:47.
And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. 

Luke 1:80.
And the child grew , and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel. 

Mar 2:8.
And immediately when Jesus perceived in his spirit 4151 that they so reasoned within themselves, he said unto them, Why reason ye these things in your hearts? 

Mar 8:12.
And he sighed deeply in his spirit 4151, and saith , Why doth this generation seek after a sign? verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation.

Mat 22:43. 
He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit 4151 call him Lord, saying , 

Mat 27:50.
Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.

to enjoy real life
a) to have true life and worthy of the name
b) active, blessed, endless in the kingdom of God

A point of emphasis here is life which is endless in the kingdom of God. We are spirits just as Jesus is  a spirit.

Matthew 9:18.
While he spake these things unto them, behold , there came a certain ruler, and worshipped him, saying , My daughter is even now dead : but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live.
