Matthew 17:3.
And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him.

At the tranfiguration Moses and Elijah appeared from heaven in some visible form and talked with Jesus. This is an explicit statement that consciousness exists after death.

Revelation 6:9-10
9  Note And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held: 
10  And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?

Again this verse is an explicit statement that consciousness exists after death.

Some declare the when the seal was broken the sleeping souls were temporarily awaken and then immediately put back to sleep.  When they awoke then they realized that they had been sleeping for they perceived as a long time.  
Nevertheless, verse 11 says that they should rest yet for another season.  This concept of rest lines up with Samual which asks why have you disturbed my rest by awaking me.

1 Samuel 28:15.
And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayest make known unto me what I shall do.

Luke 16:22-23.
22  And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; 
23  And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
